The Watch: A Maundy Thursday Prayer Vigil
April 2, 2025Occasionally, we meet someone we know will be a lifelong friend. That’s how I feel about the Rev. Christopher Martin, our guest speaker and presenter this weekend, March 22-23, 2025. Christopher and I met while we were first-year students at Yale Divinity School. After our graduation, we both served as curates (newly ordained assistants, apprenticing a rector or dean) in churches in Hartford, Connecticut. Christopher served at the Cathedral, and I served at St. John’s Church in West Hartford. We began to meet and compare notes. I realized then that I had met someone who would garner my respect and bless me with friendship for a lifetime. Christopher and I worked on projects throughout the years. Christopher has long held the belief that the truest form of church, the transformative heartbeat of our communities, lies in small groups. Through the years, he traveled this country studying and observing small groups in many different denominations. Then, over a decade ago, we joined some other priests to write the vows that people in Discipleship groups are asked to recite each week, and Christopher published The Restoration Project. Christopher and I believe Christians today can discern God’s will for their lives, but this is best done in community, specifically in a kind of small group that we call Discipleship groups. With a few trusted disciples, you can get alignment with God and your life, discover your ministry, and lead a fulfilled life. Christopher will be with us this coming weekend. He will lead us in a workshop, The Art of Discernment, on Saturday and preach and teach on Sunday. Please join me in welcoming my spiritual companion, friend, and his amazing wife, Chloe. In Christ’s love, |
