The Rev. John W. Murray III, known as Jack, died peacefully at the age of 85. Born in 1940, he was a native of Charleston, South Carolina, where he was raised at Grace Church Cathedral and first discerned his call to the priesthood. He was ordained in the Diocese of South Carolina.
Jack began his undergraduate studies at Emory University before transferring to the College of Charleston, where he graduated and met his beloved wife, Sara Ann, who survives him. He went on to graduate from Virginia Theological Seminary in 1967.
Throughout his ministry, Jack served parishes in the Dioceses of South Carolina and Atlanta, and later devoted 20 years to Holy Trinity in Pensacola in the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast. There, he was known for his faithful pastoral leadership and enduring commitment to his congregation.
Jack and Sara Ann were courageous advocates for racial justice, especially during the 1960s and in the years that followed—living out their faith not only in word, but in action.
In retirement, they returned to Charleston, where they operated a bed and breakfast for a decade, extending their gift of hospitality in a new way. In 2012, they moved to Jacksonville to be near family.
Jack is survived by his wife, Sara Ann, and their two children.
