Jean Carrison Dodd (Caldwell) is a name that is synonymous with all that is best about the visual arts in Jacksonville. She has been and continues to be a joyful and tireless leader for the arts at all levels. Jean is a visual artist with a wide scope of interests, as this exhibition at St. John’s Cathedral shows.
Five impressionistic paintings exhibit her fascination with flowers and the natural world. These are complemented by still life paintings of sophistication and great charm. Another series of paintings starts with seascapes and works its way to colorful landscapes.Yet another series presents amusing, playful images of fish, which no doubt relates to her sense of humor and love for teaching children. As an avid gardener and observer of flora and fauna, Jean created another series of paintings that brings us closeup to the mysteries of the natural world.
As the Curator of Education at the Cummer Museum, Jean developed a system of museum education combined with installations and innovative programming that set a precedent for regional and national museums. As a teacher and administrator, she has lead and participated in the Jacksonville education community at a variety of schools and programs.
Jean is a Deacon in the Episcopal Church, a gifted preacher and has taught a wide variety of religious subject matter from children’s classes to adult level classes. The single portrait in the exhibition demonstrates her sense of compassion.
She is the recipient of a wide variety of awards for her art, teaching and museum work including Cultural Council Artist Award; Florida Times-Union EVE Award; Southern Association of Arts and Letters Award; Florida Museum Association Innovator Award; Florida Museum Lifetime Leadership Award; Very Special Arts 2000 Leadership Award.
