Current: Young Adult Ministry
Throughout July and August, we’ll be looking at the ministries at St. John’s Cathedral each week. These ministry spotlights are intended to inform you of the various opportunities available and to encourage you to get involved. By Rally Day, Sunday August 26, you’ll have a good idea of where you’d like to apply your talents and time. This week the Young Adult Ministry is in the spotlight, Devanne Jones is the chair.
You may have noticed the past few ads for young adult ministry events have been using the word Current. For a long time, the group was called Y.A.M.S., which stands for Young Adults Married and Single. However, we discussed it and decided to update and re-brand the group. This included our new name and logo, featured here.
Current refers to both that we are the current generation of upcoming members, and to the bodies of water – the Atlantic Ocean, the St John’s River – that surround us. All the bodies of water that impact our life have a current that moves unseen through them, like Christ moves unseen within us.
Young adult ministry is not one of the more well-known ministries in the Episcopal Church. Some of you may be aware of the campus ministries in the Diocese of Florida – the EpiscoGators, EpiscoNoles, and the Osprey Episcopalians – but other than that there isn’t much that is meant to cater to young adults, ages 20-35. This is something that Current desires to change.
Our vision is to establish a thriving ministry where young adults can gather in fellowship and faith. Membership at the Cathedral is not a requirement, but we encourage people in the group to become members at a church and both attend regularly and be involved. We meet weekly, rotating between member’s homes, for dinner and pray Compline. We also plan to go to Rock the Universe, a Christian music event at Universal Orlando Resort. This fall from 10:00-10:45 on Sunday mornings we would like to invite all young adults to a Christian Formation class on Seven Christian Practices.
If you would like to join us for any of our offerings, or know someone who would, please have them contact me at [email protected] or at (904)356-5507 ext. 106. A few members will be at breakfast on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. in Taliaferro Hall, please stop by and say hello!
