Finding Soul Friends
Celebrate! In our liturgical calendar, Christmas continues even as 2021 recedes and 2022 rises. While we continue to observe Christmas, tradition holds that we reflect on the end of one year and think about how the new year can be richly fulfilling. When it comes to making resolutions, please put one thought at the head of your list: developing soul friends.
The doctrine of the Trinity is a central Christian belief about God. Episcopalians speak of a three-legged stool of scripture, tradition, and reason. In her sermon for the fourth Sunday of Advent, Dean Kate reminded us there needs to be a trinitarian relationship between God, and us, and someone else in order to truly figure out God’s will for us.
Consider, if not already a part of one, joining a discipleship group. Having three or four people who are not family members but who have your back is rewarding and helpful. Knowing well a small group who can share your sorrows and your joys will make this year richly fulfilling. Groups can choose to meet in person or online. I am happy to join any fledgling group for their first meeting or two to demonstrate the format if you would find that helpful.
In a congregation of our size with more than one Sunday service and with both in-person and online attendees, it is challenging to get to know the entire congregation. Imagine how rich it would be to get to know well a small group, a group who may well become your soul friends.
