God, Humanity and the Earth

Dear Friends,
As Lent approaches and we continue the class on Genesis, I am marveling at the connection that Holy Scripture establishes between God, humanity and the earth. When Cain murders his brother Abel, the Scripture says that the soil gaped with its mouth and drank Abel's blood. Cain is estranged from the land because he murdered his brother. Sunday we will look at Noah and the Flood. We will see how the activities of the humans and the life of the earth are incredibly intertwined.
And the earth was corrupt before God and the earth was filled with outrage. And God saw the earth and look, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted its ways on the earth.
~Genesis 6:11-13
It is an ancient concept in many cultures that our behavior with one another effects our relationship with nature. If nature is indeed a living thing, a responsive thing, then what does it respond to?
As Lent approaches, I want you to consider joining me on a plastic fast. Consider that our behavior in purchasing plastic just to use it once might in fact be a sin. And once you consider this concept, watch how difficult it is to avoid that sin.
Can one sin against the natural world? Is our relationship with the land like any other relationship, capable of being distorted or even broken? These are the questions that we are pondering on Sundays at 10 am. Join us.
And, may God’s blessings pour down upon you.
In Christ’s love,
Kate+
