A brief history of Safe Passage
Hanley Denning, Safe Passage founder, went to Guatemala in 1997 to study Spanish. After a trip to the slums by the Guatemala City garbage dump, where she witnessed children foraging for food rather than going to school, she sold her possessions and started a school, Safe Passage.
Today Safe Passage is an international model, educating over 500 children and 100 adults from nearly 300 families. Safe Passage breaks the cycle of poverty by providing education, healthcare, nutrition, and social services. St. John’s Cathedral pilgrims will be ambassadors for this transformational program.
The SJC Pilgrimage: April 21-28
On Sunday, May 26, 2024, we heard inspiring stories from those who visited Safe Passage in Guatemala City. The group spent a week immersing themselves in the incredible work going on in and around the garbage dump in Guatemala City. Today, a school provides an excellent education to children and offers programs that teach job skills and trades to women.
Our group's stories were profoundly moving. A recurring theme was that the missionaries felt they received far more than they gave. They spoke of the deep friendships and enduring bonds they formed during their time at Safe Passage, connections that will remain with them for life. The experience was transformative, highlighting the powerful impact of Hanley's vision and the ongoing efforts to uplift and empower the community.
